We allow tanker trucks, contractors, and other permitted users to use designated fire hydrants as a temporary water supply. Temporary hydrant use permits are issued based on use:
- Non transient—Use of a single hydrant to supply water for a construction site.
- Transient—Use of any designated hydrants to fill tanker trucks.
Transient users must meet our backflow prevention requirements and have a backflow inspection before a permit will be issued. For non transient users, CWS will install the hose and backflow prevention assembly on the hydrant. More info: Temporary Fire Hydrant Water Use Manual.
To apply for a permit, complete the Transient Permit Application Form or the Non Transient Permit Application Form included in the policy or call our Cross Connection Control department at (843) 727-7216.
A list of hydrants designated for transient use is available here.
Click here to launch the Transient Hydrant Locator web application, which utilizes the most current location and detail info we have for each designated hydrant.
