Sewer Service
Charleston Water System provides direct (retail) sewer service for 50,000 accounts, mostly within the City of Charleston, although we do serve unincorporated areas in West Ashley and parts of Johns Island within the urban growth boundary.
In addition to our retail service, we also treat wastewater from Folly Beach, Hollywood, Meggett, Ravenel, and the James Island Public Service District on a wholesale basis, but we do not own or operate the sewer system in these areas.
Charleston Water System has two wastewater treatment plants: The Plum Island treatment plant, our primary plant, which has a permitted capacity of 36 million gallons per day (mgd), and the Daniel Island treatment plant, which is used for pre-treatment and has a permitted capacity of one million gallons per day.
Who's your sewer provider?
Charleston Water System provides sewer service for a smaller geographic area than our water service. Therefore, many of our water customers receive sewer service from another utility.
Our sewer service area includes the City of Charleston, unincorporated areas in West Ashley, parts of Johns Island, and the Cainhoy peninsula. For CWS water customers outside of these areas, public sewer service is provided by one of the following utilities:
Charleston Water System is the billing agent for some of these sewer providers (you'll see this noted on your bill), but we do not set rates or manage the sewer infrastructure for these agencies.
