Charleston Water System receives prestigious award for environmental protection
(June 7, 2004)—The Association of Metropolitan Sewerage Agencies (AMSA) has recognized Charleston Water System's Plum Island Wastewater Treatment Plant for achieving five (5) consecutive years of perfect permit compliance. Charleston Water System is one of only 17 utilities nationwide to receive the prestigious Platinum Award for this compliance record.
“We are honored to be recognized with the top utilities in the nation, but the true reward is knowing that our efforts allow the public to enjoy a clean, scenic Charleston Harbor,” said Andy Fairey, Charleston Water System's Director of Water Resources.
The Plum Island plant treats about 21 million gallons of wastewater every day and returns the cleaned effluent to the Charleston Harbor. The plant is designed to treat up to 36 million gallons per day. Charleston Water System and other wastewater utilities must comply with DHEC permits designed to ensure that harmful bacteria, oxygen-demanding substances, and other pollutants are removed from the wastewater before it is released into the environment. Since the plant opened in 1970, water quality in the Charleston Harbor has improved dramatically, a testimony to the importance of wastewater treatment in protecting public health and the environment.
The Charleston Water System is a publicly owned utility that provides water and wastewater service to more than 400,000 people in the greater Charleston area. Charleston Water System operates one drinking water treatment plant and two wastewater treatment plants.
