(March 24, 2010, 11:00 a.m.)—Charleston Water System crews are repairing a leaking 8-inch water main in the southbound lanes of Savannah Highway between Ashley Town Center Drive and Parkdale Drive, just south of the I-526/Savannah Highway intersection.
Representatives with the Department of Transportation (DOT) are assisting Charleston Water System with traffic control. One southbound lane is now open to traffic, but drivers are encouraged to avoid the area.
The leak was reported by a passing motorist around 8:30 Wednesday morning. By 10:00 a.m., crews had isolated the section of leaking pipe and begun repairs. Several businesses on the southbound side are without water service until repairs are complete, which is estimated to be mid-afternoon. The cause of the leak on the 50-year-old water main has not been determined.
After the leak is fixed, crews will repave a section of the roadway that buckled as a result of the leak. An update on the repair status and lane closure will be issued before the evening rush hour.
