Message from the CEO
  Dear Friends,

To truly appreciate the value of clean drinking water, consider life before treatment technology and public water systems: Waterborne illnesses were a major cause of death. Fires commonly destroyed entire neighborhoods. Industry and economic development were limited to areas with an abundant supply of fresh water. And raw sewage polluted our nation's lakes and rivers.

Today, things are much different. Our public health and overall quality of life are much better, thanks in large part to public water and wastewater utilities like Charleston Water System. But this is not the end of the story; our work continues and we face new challenges.

Today, many utilities, including Charleston Water System, must update or replace aging infrastructure and add new infrastructure to serve a growing population. These capital projects are costly, and we must balance infrastructure needs with affordability of service--and help customers recognize the true value of clean drinking water and highly treated wastewater.

To provide the best possible service at the lowest possible cost, we strive to work smart by leveraging available technology such as automated meter reading and online bill payments to increase work efficiencies. Furthermore, we will continue to focus on empowering our work force with the knowledge and resources they need to serve our customers, and we are committed to providing best-in-class customer service. Above all, we are always mindful of and working together AS A TEAM toward our mission to protect public health and the environment.

With the support of a dedicated staff of 420 associates and our Board of Commissioners, Charleston Water System will continue providing valuable water and wastewater services that so radically improved our quality of life nearly a century ago.

Sincerely,

Kin Hill, P.E.
